LAKEWOOD Village Businesses TO remain open as construction of the Chautauqua Avenue Green Street Retrofit Project Begins
Chautauqua Avenue within the Village of Lakewood is about to undergo a comprehensive storm water retrofit project this spring. The Village, in partnership with the Chautauqua Lake and Watershed Management Alliance (Alliance), will be completing a green infrastructure retrofit of the street and adjacent curb areas between Second Street and Summit Avenue beginning in April. The project engineer is Barton & Loguidice, and the contractor is Kingsview Enterprises.
The Village was awarded a grant from the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation (NYSEFC) through the Green Innovation Grant Program and Clean Water State Revolving Fund in 2018 to implement this project, which was initially identified as part of the Village of Lakewood and Town of Busti Storm Water Management Engineering Study completed in 2018. As part of this grant, construction crews will be installing storm water street trees adjacent to the sidewalk and permeable interlocking concrete pavers in the intersections and in the curb areas. When complete, these retrofits will promote infiltration and biofiltration of urban storm water, reduce burden on existing drainage infrastructure, and provide co-benefits of improved aesthetics, increased public awareness of urban storm water management and lake stewardship, and reinvigoration of the traditional “Main Street” character.
Kingsview Enterprises expects to begin construction in April with substantial completion by late June. The Village’s Department of Public Works will also be assisting with construction. Individuals driving through Chautauqua Avenue may experience construction-related detours over the next few months but are encouraged to continue visiting local businesses in the project area, which will remain open and accessible throughout the project.
