Zoning is the process of dividing land in a municipality into zones (e.g. residential, industrial) in which certain land uses are permitted or prohibited. The type of zone determines whether planning permission for a given development is granted. Zoning may specify a variety of outright and conditional uses of land. It may also indicate the size and dimensions of land area as well as the form and scale of buildings. These guidelines are set in order to guide growth and development. Areas of land are divided by appropriate authorities into zones within which various uses are permitted. Thus, zoning is a technique of land-use planning as a tool of modern planning used by local governments.
The Village of Lakewood’s Zoning Board of Appeals meets monthly on the 2nd Thursday of each month 7:00 PM, Village Hall. All Village meetings are open to the public and residents are invited to attend these meetings.

Do I need a building permit?
Residents planning on doing any new construction at their residence, (addition, storage shed, fence, deck, etc.) should check with the Building Inspector’s office to find out if what they are planning requires a building or zoning permit.
