Tree Committee
The Mission of the Village of Lakewood New York Tree Committee is to create and sustain a thriving urban forest. The Tree Committee advises the Village on the planting and maintenance of the trees on the streets, parks, and other public land within the Village. The goal is to create a resilient, sustainable, and cohesive ecosystem to enhance the environment and contribute to the livability of the community for today and for future generations to come.
Trees provide many benefits to individual citizens and the community. Benefits from a healthy urban forest are:
- Natural beauty – Improving the aesthetics of the community
- Create places of rest and tranquility
- Improved water quality and erosion prevention via storm water interception and management
- Energy conservation via shade and cooling
- Air pollutants reduced or removed
- Cleaner air and added oxygen via carbon dioxide reduction
- Noise reduction
- Homes, food, and protection for wildlife

Tree City USA
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced that the Village of Lakewood has been awarded Tree City USA by the national Arbor Day Foundation.
Mr. Richard Rose, vVillage of Lakewood Tree Committee Chairman, was thrilled with the announcement and wished to thank the entire Tree Committee.
Mr. Rose indicated that he and the entire committee plan to celebrate the announcement with a community arbor day event on Saturday, April 27th.
2018 Arbor Day Celebration
On 27 April 2018 the National Arbor Day Celebration in Lakewood honored William and Kay Fugagli, founders of the Lakewood Tree Committee. Mayor Cara Birrittieri reads the Arbor Day Proclamation with the Fugugli’s. Deputy Mayor Ted McCague, Mayor Cara Birrittieri, Bruce Robinson, Kay Fugagli, William Fugagli, and Richard Rose with the 2018 Arbor Day Tree in Veteran’s Park.
